*Argentina’s economy minister,
Martín Guzmán, has held his first meeting with officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the renegotiation of Argentina’s outstanding debt with the IMF and the future of the US$57bn Stand-by Arrangement (SBA). Guzmán met the head of the IMF’s mission for Argentina,
Luis Cubeddu, and the IMF’s deputy director for the Western Hemisphere
Julie Kozack in New York City for over two hours. Afterwards, Cubeddu told reporters that the meeting was
“extremely positive”, adding that
“we are beginning to elaborate the next steps”. Meanwhile in a statement, the IMF said it was now planning to send a technical mission to Argentina in February
“to continue to exchange views on macroeconomic plans and debt sustainability”. The statement also confirmed that Guzmán will next meet IMF Managing Director
Kristalina Georgieva on 5 February on the sidelines of a seminar being organised at the Vatican.
