With the first round due on 4 October, Brazil’s municipal elections are now just under nine months away. President Jair Bolsonaro, whose nascent political party Aliança pelo Brasil may not be set up in time to register candidates, has for the moment indicated that he does not intend to put his weight behind specific contenders or parties. For the left-wing opposition Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), however, work has begun as it hopes this year’s local elections will be an opportunity to regain some of the political influence that it lost in the 2018 general election.
