HONDURAS: Anti-corruption efforts receive setback
President Juan Orlando Hernández marked his second year in office by pledging to move forward this year with a “new electoral system”. Ahead of the 2021 general election, electoral reform is widely considered crucial to addressing concerns which emerged following the 2017 presidential vote which was marred by electoral fraud allegations and deadly violence. Yet efforts to boost the credibility of the political establishment have received a significant blow with the government’s announcement earlier this month that it had failed to reach an agreement with the Organization of American States (OAS) to renew the mandate of the OAS-sponsored Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (Maccih), which consequently ended on 19 January after nearly four years in the country.
