In brief: Brazilian gov’t releases funds for states affected by rain

* Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has announced that the federal government will release R$892m (US$210m) in emergency credit for the country’s three south-eastern states which have been affected by heavy rains over the past week – Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro. The federal government hopes these funds will help with the reconstruction of infrastructure in the affected cities and the reestablishment of essential services to the population. The regional development ministry has already released R$7.7m for Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais state capital), which has seen record rains and destruction, causing 13 deaths. As part of the federal government’s efforts to assist the affected states deal with the consequences of the weather, the citizenship ministry is distributing payment of the Bolsa Família conditional cash transfer programme and other benefits ahead of schedule.
