* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest unemployment figures, according to which the unemployment rate fell to 11% in the last three months of 2019, down from 11.6% over the same period the previous year, and 11.8% in the three months to September 2019. Brazil’s unemployed population now numbers 11.6m. Over the course of 2019, the unemployment rate averaged 11.9%, down from an average of 12.3% in 2018. Informal workers represent 41.1% of the active workforce, around 38.4m people, the highest figure in absolute terms since 2016.
