In brief: Chile’s December economic activity surprises positively

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released the figures for the monthly economic activity index (Imacec) for December 2019, according to which monthly economic activity expanded 1.1% compared with December 2018, and 3.5% in seasonally adjusted terms compared with November 2019. In the 12 months to December 2019, the Imacec grew 0.6%. Chile’s economy minister Lucas Palacios noted that this result exceeded expectations, after a contraction of the Imacec in November 2019, and showed that the economy is beginning to recover from the effects of the sometimes violent social protests which began shaking the country in mid-October last year. The deputy finance minister, Francisco Moreno Guzmán, highlighted the resilience of Chile’s economy in light of this positive Imacec.
