In brief: Piñera announces measures against water scarcity in Chile

* Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has highlighted the measures that his government is taking to respond to the water scarcity currently affecting 136 municipalities across five of the country’s regions. A ‘state of scarcity’ has been decreed in these municipalities, allowing for the execution of extraordinary measures to deliver water to farmers. The government is investing Cl$135bn (US$173m) in 169 rural drinking water systems, which will increase potable water coverage from 53% currently to 100% by 2024. The Chilean government further noted that US$6bn will be spent on the construction of 26 reservoirs across the country, along with further investments in developing new water sources, plans for doubling the number of desalination plants, for the exploitation of deep aquifers, for the reuse of sewage waters and for the renewal of aquifers.
