HAITI: Pressure grows on Moïse over elections

Since announcing at the start of the year that the terms of representatives of Haiti’s entire lower chamber and two-thirds of the senate had expired (meaning he would effectively rule by decree [WR-20-02] as of 13 January), President Jovenel Moïse has shown few signs that he is seeking to address the key issue of staging elections, which were scheduled for October 2019. With US pressure mounting to set a date, there is growing concern that rather than focus on addressing the institutional void, the unpopular Moïse has other priorities.
