BRAZIL: More of the same in the Amazon

The announced creation of a ‘council of the Amazon’ in late January spurred hopes that President Jair Bolsonaro’s government might finally be beginning to address concerns surrounding the conservation of the Brazilian Amazon. Sceptics who branded the move as a mere PR stunt may, however, have been correct, as a fortnight later Bolsonaro announced a bill to regulate mining and other commercial extractive activities on protected indigenous territories – a move widely condemned as disregarding indigenous rights and being environmentally damaging.
