* Uruguay’s tourism ministry (Mintur) has released figures for tourist arrivals to the country in January, which show a slight increase in the number of tourists compared with the previous year. Including Uruguayans living abroad, a total 444,509 non-resident visitors arrived in Uruguay in January, a 3% increase on January 2019. Within this, the number of Brazilian visitors increased 6.8%, while the number of Argentine visitors also increased, albeit by just 0.7%. The Uruguayan government was expecting tourism to take a hit this year considering the economic crisis in neighbouring Argentina. Argentines are by far the most important contributors to Uruguayan tourism, making up 65% of total visitors in January this year. Despite the increase in numbers of visitors, tourist spending decreased by 7.5% in January 2020 compared with last year, to a total of US$327.6m.
