In brief: Brazil’s 2019 economic activity below expectations

* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released the latest figures for the index of economic activity (IBC-Br), used as a preview of GDP growth, according to which the country’s economic activity expanded by 0.89% in 2019. This is below recent predictions for GDP growth in excess of 1% in 2019. The IBC-Br grew 0.46% in the fourth quarter of 2019 compared with the third quarter, and 1.46% year-on-year. Economic activity presented a monthly contraction of 0.27% in December 2019, compared with November.
