Ecuador’s Moreno meets Trump

Ecuador: On 12 February Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno met US President Donald Trump in the White House, where they announced to the press that they are negotiating a bilateral trade deal. The visit marked the first official visit to the US by an Ecuadorean head of state since 2003. Speaking with the press before the meeting, Trump said “we are working on trade deals, we’re working on military options, including the purchase of a lot of our military equipment...And we’re negotiating some very important pacts between Ecuador and the US.” Later that day Moreno tweeted that Ecuador will be joining ‘America Crece’, the Trump administration’s hemispheric energy and infrastructure investment initiative; that the US will be training Ecuadorean teachers and police officers; and that Ecuador will create a criminal intelligence centre and a unit for fighting corruption. Moreno also reiterated his stance over Venezuela, saying “we reject and condemn Venezuela’s violent reception of [opposition leader] Juan Guaidó and the aggressive actions against his team and family. In Washington DC, Moreno also met Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Luis Almagro, and the president of the World Bank David Malpass, among others.
