* Peru’s national statistics institute (Inei) has reported that the country’s economy grew by just 2.16% in 2019, down from 3.99% in 2018, marking Peru’s lowest annual growth since 2009. The government forecast at the start of 2019 had been for growth in excess of 4%, but Inei attributed the disappointing results to decreased mining production, as the sector contracted by 0.05%, and a bad year for the fishing industry, which fell by 25%. Economy & finance minister María Antonieta Alva had previously cited regional economic uncertainty as a contributing factor, and predicted growth would return to 4% in 2020.
