In brief: Growth up in Colombia, despite protests

*Colombia’s national statistics institute (Dane) has reported that the country’s economy grew 3.3% in 2019, up from 2.5% in 2018. Growth stayed strong in the fourth quarter despite widespread protests, as GDP grew by 3.4% compared to the same period in 2018. Finance Minister Alberto Carrasquilla blamed these protests for the failure to meet the government’s 3.6% growth target for 2019, but voiced optimism that Colombia is on course to achieve 3.7% growth in 2020, after the official target was reduced from 4% last week.
