In brief: Nicaraguan gov’t announces ‘biggest ever’ energy plant

* The government led by President Daniel Ortega has announced that Nicaragua’s electricity distribution companies Distribuidora de Electricidad del Norte (DisNorte) and Distribuidora de Electricidad del Sur (DisSur) have signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with US-based global energy infrastructure company New Fortress Energy LLC. As part of the agreement, New Fortress will construct a natural gas-fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 300MW to supply power to Nicaragua’s national electric grid supply via an offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving, storage and regasification terminal. Energy Minister Salvador Mansell told the press that the plant will be “the biggest in the country’s history”.
