In brief: Brazil’s current account deficit deepens in January

* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released the latest balance of payment figures, according to which the government posted a US$11.9bn current account deficit in January this year, up from US$9bn in January 2019 and the worst deficit for the month of January since 2015. In the 12 months to January 2020, the accumulated current account deficit totalled US$52.3bn, equivalent to 2.85% of GDP, up from US$49.5bn (2.69% of GDP) in the 12 months to January 2019.
