* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released figures for the monthly economic activity index (Imacec) for January 2020, which showed this was up 1.5% compared with the same month in 2019. The mining Imacec was up 2.2%, while non-mining Imacec was up 1.5%. The January figure was above the 1% expected by the survey of economic expectations published by the BCCh at the start of February, following mass protests in late 2019 over inequality and the high cost of living. Finance Minister
Ignacio Briones described the January Imacec figure as “
positive” but added this is still two percentage points below earlier growth projections, noting that at the start of October 2019, 3.3% GDP growth was forecast for 2020, while the latest forecasts expect between 0.5% and 1.5%.
