th consecutive depreciation. Since the start of 2020, the US dollar has appreciated in excess of 14% against the real. Interventions by Brazil's central bank (BCB), which most recently auctioned US$1bn in new foreign exchange swap contracts, have failed to contain the depreciation of the real, as expectations that the Brazilian currency would remain weak in 2020 have been compounded by the global uncertainty surrounding the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic.
