COLOMBIA: Competing priorities as Duque meets Trump

The bilateral meeting between Colombia’s President Iván Duque and US President Donald Trump on 2 March had an air of improvisation about it – according to Trump, it had been “scheduled very quickly, over the weekend”. Both presidents’ statements to the press before and after the meeting focused principally on the issue of coca eradication in Colombia, but the hasty nature of Duque’s visit to the White House has aroused suspicions that the main objective was in fact to discuss a plan of action on Venezuela.
