DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina tries to get PLD back on track

President Danilo Medina delivered his state-of-the-nation address on 27 February, to mark Independence Day in the Dominican Republic, against the backdrop of the largest protest since the suspension of municipal elections on 16 February. Several thousand people gathered outside the national electoral council (JCE) in central Santo Domingo, but the demonstration fell a long way short of the ambitious target of 1m people that organisers had hoped would participate. Medina emphatically rejected claims by opposition parties that the government sabotaged the elections to avoid a heavy defeat for the long-ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD).
