NICARAGUA: Opposition launches new national coalition

Nicaragua’s two main opposition outfits, Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia and Unidad Nacional Azul y Blanco, have launched a new ‘National Coalition’ (Coalición Nacional) to challenge the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega. Unlike previous efforts to unite by the two groups, both of which have emerged since April 2018, when the Ortega government began its crackdown on opponents, the latest coalition includes political parties such as the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) of disgraced former president Arnoldo Alemán (1997-2002).
