MEXICO: Hoping to avoid a repeat of 2009

The coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic reached Mexico this week, with the local authorities confirming the first handful of cases in the country. The arrival of the disease has stirred worrying memories of the 2009 AH1N1 influenza (swine flu) pandemic. The AH1N1 outbreak hit Mexico hard, claiming thousands of lives and battering the national economy. The government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador insists that the current situation is under control and that it will be able to manage any contingencies. But some are unconvinced that the Mexican authorities learned the lessons from 2009 and are urging the López Obrador administration not to be complacent.
