In brief: Costa Rica raises public health alert over Covid-19

* Costa Rica’s health ministry has raised a sanitary alert over the global coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic to ‘yellow’, allowing for the mobilisation and transfer of financial resources to respond to the public health emergency, the implementation of dedicated operative tables, and twice-daily meetings of the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE), the body responsible for co-ordinating responses to an emergency. As of yesterday (8 March), Costa Rica had nine confirmed cases of coronavirus (including two US citizens) and 34 suspicious cases under examination. Costa Rica is the first country in the Central American isthmus to confirm cases of Covid-19. The virus has now spread across Latin America, with cases multiplying in most countries in South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.
