* Uruguay’s ministry of livestock, agriculture, and fisheries (MGAP) has declared an agricultural emergency in areas spanning five departments in the south of the country which have suffered from drought: Montevideo, Canelones, San José, Maldonado, and Lavalleja. Deputy agriculture minister, Ignacio Buffa, has said that 800,000 hectares of land are affected (within which are 500,000 hectares of productive land), and that the emergency agricultural fund, which is equivalent to around US$8m, will be destined to support 5,400 family producers whose crops and livestock have been affected by the lack of rain.
