In brief: Brazil’s industrial production shows slow recovery

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for industrial production, which picked up in January with a 0.9% month-on-month expansion. Positive activity was observed in 17 of the 26 studied areas and three of the four economic categories, a generalised improvement not observed in the industrial sector since April 2019, the Ibge’s Andé Macedo noted. The industrial sector in Brazil had accumulated a 2.4% contraction in November-December 2019. Year-on-year, Brazil’s industrial production fell by 0.9% in January 2020, while it fell by an accumulated 1% in the 12 months to January.
