In brief: Bahamas updates on Dorian clean-up efforts

* The managing director of the Bahamas’ Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA), Katherine Forbes-Smith, has provided an update on the ongoing clean-up operations following Hurricane Dorian, which struck the islands six months ago. Forbes-Smith said that the government has spent US$20m in these operations to date. The Category 5 storm was the strongest on record to hit the Bahamas, with winds up to 185mph, leaving the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama with “unprecedented” amounts of debris, which is yet to be shifted. Once the land debris has been cleared, the DRA will get started on the large amounts of waste that was washed into the sea. “This will be a major clean-up effort”, Forbes-Smith said. Total damages caused by the hurricane are estimated at US$3.4bn, but donations continue to roll in and have exceeded US$1.8bn, with US$300m arriving since the DRA’s pledge conference in January.
