* Four indigenous federations from Peru’s Loreto region have filed a complaint to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) against Netherlands-based oil company Pluspetrol. They are seeking to hold Pluspetrol responsible for the environmental destruction caused by its exploration projects, and to eliminate the legal loopholes that allow such businesses to use a network of ‘mailbox companies’ to evade responsibilities in the countries in which they operate.
Aurelio Chino, president of the Federación Indígena Quechua del Pastaza (Fediquep), said that Pluspetrol could not be held to account on environmental, human rights, or taxation issues in Peru, and that the indigenous complainants were instead forced to seek an international resolution.
