BOLIVIA: Áñez haunted by human rights failings

A special session of the Bolivian legislative assembly was held in El Alto on 5 March, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the city’s official foundation. This brought interim president Jeanine Áñez back to the scene of an incident that has become a major thorn in the side of her government – the ‘Senkata massacre’ of November 2019, widely condemned by human rights groups [WR-19-49], in which 11 civilians were killed by state security forces tasked with ‘pacifying’ the country after Áñez came to power.
