BRAZIL: Back in the US

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro travelled to Florida on 7 March for his fourth visit to the US since he took over the presidency in January 2019. The frequency of these visits is testimony to Bolsonaro’s personal admiration of his US peer Donald Trump, admiration which is shared by members of his government and inner circle, and that has served to inform Brazil’s foreign policy over the last 15 months. This latest bid to court both the US government and investors also proved an opportunity for Bolsonaro to play to his more radical support base, in what may have been an attempt to divert attention from concerns over the economic impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.
