MEXICO: Concerns swirl around Tren Maya
The ‘Tren Maya’ railway line that will connect the Yucatán peninsula with the rest of south-eastern Mexico is the flagship infrastructure development project of the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. But the US$7.4bn project faces resistance from environmental groups and local communities, which argue that it will have a net negative effect on the environment and local economies. This is rejected by López Obrador, who insists that the Tren Maya will bring broad economic benefits to the area. However, an official study suggests that the project will have negative economic, environmental, social, and even public security consequences.
