In brief: Argentina decides against lockdown over economic impact

* Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández has announced the closure of all of the country’s borders for 15 days as an emergency measure to try to contain the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), but decided against imposing a country-wide quarantine, arguing that its impact on the domestic economy would be too severe. Fernández had previously mooted the possibility of imposing a national quarantine and stopping all activity in the country for a period of ten days. But after announcing that Argentina’s borders will be closed for all foreigners from 16 March, Fernández said that he had ultimately decided against a temporary general quarantine due to the impact it would have on an economy that is currently in recession. “A generalised quarantine would be too much for the country… we need to have some production. If I stop food production for 14 days there will be an enormous conflict in Argentina”, Fernández said.
