In brief: Bolivia offers economic protection during health emergency

* Bolivia’s interim president, Jeanine Áñez, has announced a set of economic measures to support citizens and small businesses affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, over which Áñez declared a health emergency and national quarantine on 17 March. These economic provisions include a B$500 (US$72.6) per child ‘family bond’ for poorer families; a two-month suspension of income tax and debt repayments for families and small businesses; and a guarantee that utilities including water, electricity, and gas will not be cut off during the emergency. The measures were welcomed by Fernando Hurtado, president of the Bolivian chamber of industry and commerce (Cainco), but he insisted that much more needs to be done to protect the country’s economy.
