COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA: Border closure risks deepening crisis

Increased efforts by Venezuela’s de facto president Nicolás Maduro in recent months towards international reconciliation [WR-20-05] have generally been received with little enthusiasm. As the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has driven a further intensification of Maduro’s outreach attempts, Colombian President Iván Duque’s decision on 13 March to close the border between the two countries represented a significant setback for Maduro, and it will likely have significant repercussions for both countries.
