DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Opposition sweeps municipal polls

The long-ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) suffered a serious setback in the rescheduled municipal elections on 15 March. The PLD, which has held executive power since 2004, went into the elections holding 107 of the country’s 158 municipalities. But the main opposition Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) turned the tables on the PLD, winning the popular vote, securing more than half of the municipalities in total and taking the vast majority of the most populous cities in the Dominican Republic. If presidential and congressional elections go ahead on 17 May, the PLD’s long political dominance could come to an end at all levels of governance.
