In brief: Costa Rica’s tourism sector declares state of calamity

* Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT) has declared that the country’s tourism sector is in a state of “total emergency and calamity” as a result of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic; Costa Rica closed its borders as part of a state of emergency declared on 16 March. According to the latest (2019) figures from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism accounted for 13.1% of Costa Rica’s GDP in 2018, creating 265,600 jobs (12.8% of total employment).
