* The mayor of Bogotá,
Claudia López, has unveiled a scheme to deliver support for impoverished and vulnerable people affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and in particular by the 19-day national quarantine declared by President
Iván Duque on 25 March. The Bogotá municipal government will pay Col$423,000 (US$104) to 350,000 families living below the poverty line, and Col$178,000 to a further 150,000 vulnerable households, including informal workers and Venezuelan migrants. The announcement of the scheme follows protests by these groups on 24 March, complaining that adequate economic protections had not been provided, and will exacerbate tensions between López and Duque, after she complained that he had failed to “
guarantee food, public services, and rent, so that vulnerable households can comply with the quarantine”.
