Brazil, like the rest of Latin America and the world, is facing a public health emergency and a looming economic recession as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Yet President Jair Bolsonaro persists in downplaying the health risks of the disease, dismissing recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the containment of the virus, and blaming the media for whipping up hysteria around the pandemic and political opponents for taking measures which will squeeze the economy dry.
