* Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released new figures which show that GDP contracted by 3.9% in 2019, an improvement on the 4% contraction in 2018. The BCN was clear that the economy continues to be affected negatively by the
“socio-political” events which began in 2018 – an allusion to the crackdown by the government led by President
Daniel Ortega on its opponents. According to the BCN figures, GDP in the fourth quarter of 2019 contracted by 0.2% year-on-year. This compares with contractions of 2.9% in the third quarter; 3.1% in the second quarter; and 9.1% in the first quarter.
