BRAZIL: Behind the femicide figures

Brazil has seen a sustained drop in homicides for two years running, since violent deaths hit a record high of close to 65,000 in 2017. In 2019, the country saw 19% fewer homicides than in 2018, according to the ‘Monitor da Violência’, data compiled by news site G1, the centre for violence studies at the Universidade de São Paulo (NEV-USP), and the think tank Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (FBSP). However this improvement conceals an increase in femicides, which also reflects an increase in violence against women more generally.
