Brazil: On 29 March,
Todd Chapman, the new US ambassador to Brazil, arrived in Brasília. Ambassador Chapman took part in a videoconference with Brazil’s foreign minister
Ernesto Araújo on 30 March to present his credentials. Chapman was nominated by US President
Donald Trump in October 2019 and confirmed by the US Senate in February 2020, after the resignation of the former US Ambassador to Brazil,
Michael McKinley. On 29 March Chapman tweeted that his immediate focus as ambassador will be “
assisting the Brazilian government, the Brazilian people, and the 260,000 resident Americans in Brazil in their response to the health emergency caused by Covid-19”. Chapman reiterated that the US is committed to pursuing a broad agenda with Brazil, as outlined by both Trump and Brazil’s President
Jair Bolsonaro. Chapman’s previous posts include ambassador to Ecuador from 2016-2019, and deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Brasília (2011-2014).
