In brief: Mexico’s auto industry plunges in March

* According to figures published by Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi), vehicle production and exports in March 2020 fell by 24.6% and 11.9% respectively compared with the same month in 2019. According to the Inegi figures, 261,805 vehicles were produced in March 2020, compared with 347,391 in March 2019, while 285,075 vehicles were exported in March 2020, compared with 323,631 in March 2019. Discussing the figures over videoconference, the head of Mexico’s auto industry group Asociación Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz (Amia), Fausto Cuevas, said that the direction of the industry over the next few months is unclear, owing to the majority of producers having suspended activity in light of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Subsequently, Cuevas urged the government to push back to January 2021 the implementation of sectoral rules from the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) regional trade agreement, which as it stands could start from July.
