* Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) has released data showing that, from 13 March to 6 April, Mexican firms fired 346,878 workers in the midst of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Between 13-31 March, 198,033 people lost their jobs, a rate which has gathered pace in the seven days from 31 March to 6 April, in which 148,845 dismissals took place. Medium-sized businesses with less than 50 employees have fired the most people, accounting for 294,329 dismissals. Micro businesses with between one and five employees have dismissed 488 workers, while small businesses with between six and 50 employees have fired 52,061 people. The states to have registered the most dismissals include Quintana Roo in the eastern part of the Yucatán peninsula, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas in north-eastern Mexico, Jalisco in western Mexico, and the Estado de México (Edomex) where 56% of the dismissals took place, with around 193,000 people newly unemployed.
