VENEZUELA: Military tensions dominate the agenda

After last week’s explosive developments [WR-20-13], tensions in Venezuela have continued to simmer. The effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic are still causing serious problems in the country, with the healthcare system ill-equipped to cope with a problem of this scale. But this has remained a secondary priority for Nicolás Maduro’s government, which has focused instead on military posturing, and contesting the validity of the “narco-terrorism” charges issued against the de facto president and other senior officials.
