BOLIVIA: Border blockade stirs controversy

The struggle to repatriate citizens caught out by the sudden closure of national borders has been a widespread problem in Latin America, but the reluctance of Bolivia’s interim government to assist several hundred Bolivians stranded at the Chilean border has escalated into an issue of significant national controversy. The stalemate prompted criticism from political rivals of the interim president, Jeanine Áñez, as well as accusations from senior officials that unrest at the border is being orchestrated by the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) in an effort to “destabilise” the country.
