BRAZIL: Too little, too slow?

As Brazil’s public health emergency is intensifying, the government has also been facing criticisms over its lagging response to the economic impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. There are concerns that help for the most vulnerable is insufficient; state governors are demanding more slack from the federal government as their revenues fall; and businesses complain that credit is hard to obtain, despite measures by the central bank (BCB) to pump cash into the financial system.
