In brief: Peru expects economy to contract in 2020

* Peru’s labour minister, Sylvia Cáceres, has reported that the government has revised its projections for economic growth in 2020, and is now expecting a 2% contraction of the country’s GDP. At the start of the year the government had predicted a 4% expansion; this was reduced to 2% growth at the end of March, but Cáceres has said that the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is now expected to be even more substantial, and will be “the clearest impact of our health crisis”. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has suggested that the effect on Peru’s economy may be larger still, forecasting a 5% contraction in 2020.
