BOLIVIA: Strict measures take their toll

Despite being ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having one of the weakest healthcare systems in Latin America, the much-feared medical impact of coronavirus (Covid-19) in Bolivia seems thus far to have been largely avoided, with just 397 cases and 28 deaths reported as of 15 April. The interim government’s strict enforcement of quarantine measures has no doubt been motivated by this perceived danger, but as the nationwide lockdown starts to take its toll in other ways, there is growing pressure for a re-evaluation of this strategy.
