DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Elections pushed back

Presidential and legislative elections scheduled for next month will be postponed until July. This was not a surprise given that the Dominican Republic is in a state of lockdown due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. There had been concerns that the main opposition Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) could respond negatively to any delay, amid suspicions stemming from the suspension of February’s municipal elections [WR-20-07] and accusations that these were sabotaged by the government to avoid a heavy defeat for the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). However, the release of an audit by the Organization of American States (OAS) into the botched February vote seems to have quashed these concerns.
