In brief: Uruguay’s monthly unemployment rate hit new high before pandemic

* Uruguay’s national statistics institute (INE) has released employment figures for February, according to which the unemployment rate stood at 10.5%, up from 8.4% in February 2019, and 8.5% in January 2020. This is the highest monthly unemployment rate recorded in Uruguay since May 2007, a sharp increase which came before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic negatively impacted the job market. The unemployment rate for the rolling quarter ending in February 2020 stood at 9.2%, up from 8.4% in December 2018-February 2019.
