In brief: Venezuela’s central bank condemns transfer of state resources

* Venezuela’s central bank (BCV) has accused the political opposition and the US government of undermining the country’s response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, by transferring BCV funds held in a US bank account to a US Federal Reserve account. A BCV statement described the transfer, approved by Venezuela's opposition-controlled national assembly, as a “vulgar dispossession of financial resources”, and an act of “transnational organised crime”. Opposition leader Juan Guaidó , who is recognised as Venezuela's interim president by the US and a host of other countires, is organising his own pandemic response efforts, with a budget of US$20m – Guaidó has not revealed the source of these funds but insists that he has no access to state resources seized by the US government, which are under investigation for money laundering.
